The Principle of Teaching Reading

: Principle, process principle, Reading, word recognition skills
In learning and teaching English skills, we can not avoid the basic principle that the teacher should notice or regard them. Teaching reading to non-native speaker is not easy. Some challenges and obstacles in teaching reading need attention and the teacher should find the solutions related it. In this case, Burn, et al offered twelve principle of teaching reading in order to help the teacher and help the students.
1. Principle 1, reading as a complex act involving many factors that must be considered. This principle requires the teachers to know well and understand all of the reading process.
2. Principle 2, reading involves the construction of meaning represented by the printed symbols. This principles reader to understand what is behind and beyond the text. In other words, they are required to understand messages written and unwritten in the text.
3. Principle 3, there is no one correct way to teach reading. This principle implies that each person may have differences to meet the student’s need. Besides, they need to be well prepared with a variety of methods so that they can help all of the student’s benefits with reading.
4. Principle 4, learning to read is a continuing process. This principle implies that people who learn to read over along period of time acquire more advanced reading skills after they master prerequisite skill. Furthermore, after they have been introduced to all reading skills, refinement continues. Disregarding the place and the age, the readers can go on refining their reading skills.
5. Principle 5, students should be taught word recognition skills because it can enable them to unlock the pronunciation and meanings of unfamiliar word independently. This principle implies that it is impossible for the students to memorize all the words they will meet in the text. It means they need to learn techniques of figuring out unfamiliar word so that they can read without others’ help.
6. Principle 6, the teachers should assess the student’s reading ability and use the assessment as a basis for planning instruction. This principle implies that the teachers should consider the students’ differences in planning the reading instruction
7. Principle 7, reading and the other language arts are closely related. This principle implies that reading is closely related to three other language skills (listening, speaking, and writing). When teaching reading, the teachers must integrate them nicely.
8. Principle 8, using complete literature selections in the reading program is important. This principle implies that the students should be given opportunity to read the reading materials as a whole to develop their reading skills.
9. Principle 9, reading is an integral part of all content area instruction within the educational program. This principle means that there is relationship between reading and other subjects. In other words, teaching reading should be able to give contribution to the teaching subject and vise versa.
10. Principle 10, the students need to see that reading can be an enjoyable pursuit. This principle implies that reading implies that reading teachers should enable the students to be aware that reading can be interesting and informative for them. In this case, the teachers must be able to provide and choose interesting reading materials for them.
11. Principle 11, reading should be taught in the way that allows each child or student to experience success. This principle requires teachers to give suitable instructions with the students’ level of achievement.
12. Principle 12, encouragement of self-direction and self-monitoring of reading is important. It means that students should be given opportunity to direct and judge their own reading, to make decision about how to approach certain passages, and to select what reading speed is appropriate as well as why they are reading the passages.
